About This Play
I wrote this shortly after arriving at Stanford University as a Freshman in the fall of 1988. There was a general call for entries for the "Winter One-Acts," an annual presentation of student-written short plays. I have no idea where I got the idea, and very little memory of actually writing it, except that I hammered it out in about a week's time. Burglars is a Fawlty Towers episode, basically, and as such is more of a teleplay than a stageplay. (It even includes "Fade in" and "Fade out" directions.)
However, for a Fawlty Towers rip-off that was written in a fast week by a 17 year old kid, it is not entirely a knackless rip-off. I found the manuscript for this play on my shelf a few years ago and was surprised to find that I liked it.
