On Poetry
I wasn't ever a particular fan of poetry until I started writing some, starting when I was about 22 years old. I wrote the following hundred poems (give or take) in a short span of time, the most coming in 1994 and 1995, and then the flow stopped. I haven't written much of any since, so this remains my body of work as a poet.
The comparison of one's own work to the great poets of old cannot help but leave one feeling small, untalented, and pretentious. I found my influences in Shakespeare's sonnets (there are a number of sonnet-form poems here), in the poetry and psalms of the Bible, and in the alliterative rhythms of Gerard Manley Hopkins.
